Modding is the art of modifying computers and other hardware. It's usually a luxury activity for those who want their computers to look super cool. But in many cases modding is a necessity, like those reassembling computers with limited access to parts (e.g., Ashoka-Lemelson Fellow Mahabir Pun). It can also be used to reduce one's ecological footprint.
