Inveneo is looking for a hands-on Network Operations Engineer with deep experience in implementing NOCs (network operations centers) to monitor and support telecommunications networks – preferably in developing countries.
Inveneo is a 501c3 nonprofit social enterprise, which means that we operate like a business with a social mission. Our mission is to get the tools of technology, through computing and regional networking, to organizations operating in rural and highly underserved communities of the developing world.
Our model is built on development, not aid. We operate in a number of countries. We work with local partners to develop homegrown ability to deliver quality communications technology and alternative power solutions. The organizations we serve address some of the most pressing problems in their communities: health care, education, economic opportunity and infrastructure.
Inveneo is seeking a Network Operations Engineer who will help us stand up NOCs (network operations centers) to monitor and support telecommunications networks in the rural and developing world. We’re definitely not looking for a router jockey. This is a unique opportunity for a person with significant network support operations experience to shape how Inveneo supports its networks, and to play a role in defining a replicable framework for supporting networks in locations as diverse as Haiti, Kenya, Rwanda, and beyond.
The successful applicant should have a healthy dose of network curiosity: the interest that drives an engineer to go beyond “it’s not working” to “this is why, and here’s how we keep it from happening again.” Inveneo’s engineering team is small and agile. Our engineers must be technical generalists able to adapt quickly to unpredictable conditions and unforeseen technical challenges.
Network Operations Engineer Responsibilities

  • Learn Inveneo’s existing networks inside and out to become our lead troubleshooter and network optimizer
  • Collaborate closely with the CTO to select and customize network monitoring, management, and notification tools best suited for Inveneo’s rural network deployments
  • Develop, document, and lead implementation of network support procedures for Inveneo, to keep both our internal IT resources and our networks around the world functioning at top performance.
  • Collaborate with Inveneo staff to develop, document, and lead implementation of a replicable model for in-country NOC creation in rural and developing countries
  • Support Inveneo engineers and Inveneo partner engineers in the field by performing remote troubleshooting during network rollout
  • Propose improvements to infrastructure and process to ensure high availability of critical network resources
  • Travel internationally occasionally to lead trainings for Inveneo NOC partners on network support
  • Act as escalation point for distributed local NOCs around the world
  • Provide technical support to Inveneo partners and clients via phone, email, chat, online forums, and other channels
  • Collaborate with the broader ICTD community using social media tools
  • As needed, assist Inveneo staff members with internal technical support requests

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong self-starter, able to drive projects to completion in circumstances where little guidance and support is available
  • Minimum 5 years working as a Network Engineer
  • Minimum 5 years Linux systems administration, particularly administration of remote systems
  • Minimum 3 years script and software development in one or more of the following languages: Python, Shell, Ruby, Java, C/C++, Perl
  • Comprehensive knowledge of L2 technologies-VLANs/VLAN tagging, Spanning Tree
  • Comprehensive knowledge of L3 technologies-IP Subnetting, IP routing, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, RIP
  • Experience diagnosing complex network problems and escalating to the correct remote organization when appropriate
  • Past experience setting up and customizing network monitoring systems (Familiarity with OpenNMS and Cisco monitoring tools preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of point-to-point wireless networking systems
  • Ability to deliver training in classroom and project settings
  • Strong multi-tasking and analytical/troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work with people from a wide range of cultural, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds
  • Must play well with others

Highly Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience traveling and working in developing regions
  • Knowledge of Cisco and Mikrotik routing platforms
  • Experience planning and implementing NOC policies and procedures
  • Experience installing and customizing open source ticketing systems (RequestTracker, etc.)
  • Experience integrating mobile / SMS platforms in network monitoring systems
  • Experience with administration of carrier grade wireless networks
  • Proficiency in French or Spanish

  • Position is full-time or contract, based in San Francisco (as position evolves, some remote work and flexible schedule may be possible)
  • Must be legally eligible for employment in the United States.
  • Must be able to travel internationally to Inveneo project sites in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East (10% - 20% travel req’d.)
  • Must be willing to work outside of standard hours as needed to interact with international partners and networks
