Inveneo is Hiring: Senior Network Engineer

Inveneo is seeking a Network Engineer who will design and implement technical solutions in the rural and developing world, train Inveneo’s growing global network of IT partners, and seek new appropriate technologies. Inveneo’s engineering team is small and agile. Our engineers must be technical generalists able to draw on deep existing experience to adapt quickly to unpredictable conditions and unforeseen technical challenges. Each engineer must also maintain a specialization in at least one of Inveneo’s core competencies, acting as the team subject matter expert in that area to provide training and mentorship to other team members.
Major Responsibilities:

  • Guide technical aspects of projects from design through implementation:
    • Assess project technical requirements
    • Survey project locations in the field
    • Design technical solutions including server/workstation hardware, networks, and solar/generator/battery power systems
    • Collaborate on an Inveneo Project team, which includes representatives from project management, sales, and contracts
    • Deploy technical solutions in the field, managing a team of Inveneo’s local partners where appropriate
    • Develop a strong sense of ownership and accountability for project success
  • Build technical capacity of Inveneo partners by leading both classroom and practical training sessions
  • Provide technical support to Inveneo partners and clients via phone, email, chat, online forums, and other channels
  • Identify and research new technologies to assess suitability for the rural and developing world
  • Create and maintain documentation and training materials
  • Collaborate with the broader ICTD community using social media tools

Required Job Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years specialization in at least one of the following with working knowledge of the other:
  • Windows enterprise systems administration, desktop and server
    • Large deployment experience including Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), Sysprep, and standard imaging tools
    • Automation via Windows scripting and Microsoft VBScript
    • Microsoft enterprise administration including managing domains, active directory, and group policy
  • WAN network system administration and design:
    • Comprehensive knowledge of L2 technologies-VLANs/VLAN tagging, Spanning Tree
    • Comprehensive knowledge of L3 technologies-IP Subnetting, IP routing, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, RIP
    • Past experience setting up and customizing network monitoring systems
    • Automation of linux processes via shell script, perl, python, etc.
  • Strong self-starter, able to drive projects to completion in circumstances where little guidance and support is available
  • Ability to communicate highly technical information to a less technical audience
  • Ability to deliver training in classroom and project settings
  • Ability to work with people from a wide range of cultural, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds
  • Strong passion for Inveneo’s mission and work in the ICTD space

Highly Desirable Job Skills and Experience:

  • Experience traveling and working in developing regions
  • Long distance wireless networking experience / RF engineering experience
  • Familiarity with field operations and tools such as GPS navigation, handheld radios, map/compass work, etc.
  • AC, DC, and/or solar electrical system experience
  • Proficiency in French, Portuguese, Spanish, or Arabic

Additional Comments:

  • Position is full-time, based in San Francisco
  • Must be able to travel internationally to Inveneo project sites in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East (Approximately 30% – 50%travel required)
  • Must be willing to work outside of standard hours as needed to interact with international partners
  • Must play well with others
