African Presidential Scholars Program
The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program supports the development of the next generation of African scholars by integrating them into international academic networks based at the University’s Ann Arbor, Michigan campus.

UMAPS promotes international research and teaching collaborations across diverse disciplines by bringing early career faculty from African universities to Ann Arbor to be paired with faculty collaborators over a five-month residency. Those admitted to the UMAPS Program can:

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Round-trip airfare from their home country to Ann Arbor, Michigan
  • A research allowance, and a modest stipend to cover living expense
  • Free housing and medical insurance with the University

African Presidential Scholars Program Areas
UMAPS accepts direct applications from faculty members of colleges or universities in Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, South Africa, and Uganda for two program areas related to digital development:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Initiative: STEM-Africa seeks to nurture the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in Africa, which extends scientific knowledge and yields solutions to global problems.
  • African Social Research Initiative: ASRI promotes social science research on democratic governance and distributive politics; income dynamics and poverty; and gender, health, and development.

Faculty members of colleges and universities in all other African countries can only  apply to the UMAPS program upon nomination by a U-M faculty member with whom they have a pre-existing relationship.
